Over one million residents in New Jersey are set to receive property tax relief as the state's Division of Taxation begins distributing ANCHOR benefits. Eligible homeowners and renters will see payments up to $1,750 this week. More than 900,000 direct deposits were scheduled for October 10, with an additional 100,000 checks mailed by October 11. The distribution will continue on a rolling basis until all eligible recipients have been paid.
Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the importance of the program, stating: “I’m proud to deliver this important tax relief directly to New Jersey families, putting money back in the pockets of both homeowners and renters.” The program aims to make tax relief more accessible as part of efforts to strengthen and make New Jersey more affordable.
State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio praised the staff's dedication: “The ANCHOR program delivers crucial property tax relief to millions of New Jerseyans at all stages of life.” She noted improvements made each season for efficiency in application filing and benefit distribution.
Senate President Nick Scutari highlighted the significance of ANCHOR in easing property tax burdens: “ANCHOR will deliver much needed relief...for middle class families, senior citizens and working people throughout the state.” Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin echoed these sentiments, recognizing it as "the largest property tax relief program in state history."
New applicants can expect their benefits within 90 days unless further verification is required. Applications are open until November 30, 2024. As of now, about 225,000 new applications have been submitted.
Applicants can monitor their benefit status online at anchor.nj.gov. This marks the third year for ANCHOR distributions; last year's initiative provided over $2.1 billion in aid for more than 1.8 million participants.
Further information on ANCHOR is available online or through hotline assistance at (609) 826-4282 or 1-888-238-1233. Due to high demand during peak times, applicants might also seek help at Regional Information Centers or outreach events statewide.
