NEA endorses Kamala Harris; NJEA backs Sean Spiller for key elections

In the upcoming November elections, voters face a critical decision as they choose between candidates with differing visions for public education and America's future. This election is seen as crucial by many, including members of the National Education Association (NEA) and New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), who are rallying behind NEA-endorsed presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

NJEA members express strong support for Harris and Walz, emphasizing their belief in the positive impact of having "a thoughtful, experienced leader like Kamala Harris in the White House, with a smart, compassionate former teacher like Tim Walz by her side." They warn against potential federal-level attacks on public schools if the election favors Donald Trump, highlighting concerns over policies such as vouchers and privatization.

The stakes extend beyond economic issues. Access to diverse books, inclusive curricula, and sufficient food for students are also at risk in this election. The NJEA stresses that while this may be deemed "the most important election of your lifetime," it is certainly vital for the younger generation.

New Jersey faces its own pivotal election next year as Governor Phil Murphy concludes his final term. NJEA President Sean Spiller has announced his candidacy to succeed Murphy. The NJEA has endorsed Spiller's campaign, reflecting on significant progress made under Murphy's leadership in areas like pension funding, school financing, health insurance affordability, job protections for educational support professionals, and curriculum inclusivity.

Recalling challenges during Chris Christie's tenure as governor—such as reduced pensions and health benefits—the NJEA emphasizes the importance of continuing recent advancements rather than reverting to previous difficulties. The association is committed to supporting Spiller's bid for governorship in 2025.
