An interagency law enforcement operation led by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey resulted in the impoundment of 30 vehicles and issuance of over 500 summonses at the Outerbridge Crossing this week. The effort targeted persistent toll violators and drivers using fraudulent or obstructed license plates.
The operation, which took place on October 15, marked the first such initiative at the Outerbridge Crossing following previous operations at other regional crossings. It involved several agencies, including the NYPD, New York State Police, and others. A total of six arrests were made during the operation.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized their commitment to safe travel across bridges and tunnels. "Our collaboration with law enforcement partners across the region is vital in tackling illegal activities like toll evasion and ghost plates," he stated.
Rick Cotton, Executive Director of Port Authority, highlighted that hundreds of summonses were issued within hours alongside six arrests. "Through this collaboration, we are comprehensively and systematically addressing the issue of toll evasion," he noted.
Superintendent Edward Cetnar underscored their focus on road safety: “This operation is a clear indication that we will not tolerate anyone trying to dodge the shared responsibility of safe and equitable travel.”
Interim NYPD Commissioner Thomas G. Donlon praised the partnership between city and state forces for effectively removing illegal vehicles from streets. "I commend all our sister agencies for their exceptional work," he said.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James acknowledged such enforcements as crucial for traffic safety while highlighting continued vigilance against evasive acts.
Anthony Miranda from New York City Sheriff’s Office noted ongoing efforts against violations impacting road safety through daily enforcement initiatives.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Cathy Sheridan affirmed regional partnerships aimed at preventing toll evaders: “If you evade the toll, we will catch you.”
Mark J.F. Schroeder from DMV stressed serious consequences for those avoiding tolls while applauding law enforcement's dedication to safer streets under Governor Hochul’s leadership.
David Do from NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission commended task force members for deterring non-compliance with laws through arresting offenders who evade paying fees owed by them legally.
