With the New Jersey U.S. Senate election approaching, candidates Curtis Bashaw and Andy Kim engaged with business leaders at a forum organized by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA) in Trenton. The event allowed both candidates to address issues ranging from economic innovation to international politics.
Andy Kim, 42, is a Democrat from Moorestown and currently serves as a congressman for New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District. He previously worked as a diplomat under both the Bush and Obama administrations. Curtis Bashaw, 63, is a Republican from Cape May known for his work as a hotel entrepreneur and real estate developer. This marks his first attempt at public office.
The seat they are contesting was vacated by former Senator Bob Menendez following his resignation after being convicted on federal corruption charges. Voters will decide on November 5 who will fill this position.
Curtis Bashaw emphasized his business background and status as an outsider in politics, saying, "I’m a businessman and a political outsider. I believe we need more of that in Washington to get things done for us." He expressed his desire to alter New Jersey's status as a "donor" state that contributes more in federal taxes than it receives back.
Bashaw further stated, “We’ve had a Democratic monopoly on this seat in the U.S. Senate for 50 years in New Jersey," advocating for change by suggesting that states with senators from different parties tend to fare better regarding federal aid.
Conversely, Andy Kim highlighted his bipartisan experience and achievements during his tenure in Congress. He stated, “When it comes to the many challenges of global competitiveness... one of the biggest things holding us back is how divided we are as a country.” Kim aims to foster unity across party lines to enhance America's global standing in technology and innovation.
Both candidates addressed questions about the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. They agreed that New Jersey missed out on opportunities related to semiconductor supply chains due to insufficient strategic planning.
Regarding international issues like the Israel-Hamas conflict, Kim shared insights from his diplomatic career: “Israel had a right to defend itself” while emphasizing diplomacy to resolve violence quickly. Bashaw voiced strong support for Israel's right to defend itself decisively without negotiating with terrorists.
The NJBIA forum provided voters insight into each candidate's priorities and approaches ahead of the upcoming election.
