Essex County hosts community day offering utility bill assistance

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) is set to host the Essex County Community Utility Assistance Day on October 21. This event, organized in collaboration with the City of Newark and Essex County, aims to provide residents with access to essential utility services. The event will take place at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Christine Guhl-Sadovy, NJBPU President, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are excited to partner with the City of Newark and Essex County for the October 21 Utilities Assistance Day (UAD) to help raise awareness and maximize the impact of our utility assistance programs.” She emphasized NJBPU's commitment over the past two years to facilitate customer access to information and resources for utility bill assistance.

The event will feature participation from various organizations including the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, PSE&G, JCP&L, and others. Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz highlighted the importance of such events in overcoming challenges like complex applications and language barriers that can prevent families from receiving necessary aid.

Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin also praised the initiative as an invaluable community resource. "Utility costs can be a significant burden," she noted, emphasizing the opportunity for residents to learn about available assistance programs.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka commended the collaboration with NJBPU, saying it reflects a shared commitment to making essential services accessible. DCA Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez encouraged those concerned about winter utility bills to apply for assistance programs like LIHEAP.

Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman pointed out that many individuals eligible for utility assistance might not be aware of it. She urged residents facing higher utility bills to attend and explore available support options.

Attendees should bring specific documents such as income statements and proof of address for on-site eligibility determination. Those unable to attend can call 2-1-1 or contact NJBPU directly for more information on New Jersey’s utility assistance programs.

NJBPU is responsible for ensuring safe and adequate utility services at reasonable rates across New Jersey. More details about their services can be found on their website.
