The Multilevel III Power Cars are Electric Multiple Units (EMUs), which means they are self-propelled without needing a separate locomotive. These vehicles incorporate electric motors within one or more train vehicles and represent a first in North America.
NJ TRANSIT initially approved purchasing 113 Multilevel III vehicles from Bombardier Transit Corporation (now Alstom Transportation Inc.) in December 2018 to replace older models over 40 years old. Additional purchases were approved in February 2022 and July 2024, bringing total acquisitions since 2018 to 174 vehicles.
