The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced a temporary closure of the PATH Hoboken station from late evening on January 30, 2025, to early morning on February 25, 2025. This closure is part of the agency's two-year, $430 million PATH Forward program aimed at modernizing and improving the reliability of the transit system.
During this period, critical safety repairs and improvements will be conducted on the 116-year-old system. The full station closure allows for expedited completion of track and station work that would otherwise require prolonged service disruptions. Planned upgrades include replacing in-station tracks, refurbishing concrete platforms, repairing stairways, and updating the track switching network outside the station.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole acknowledged the inconvenience to riders but emphasized the necessity of these upgrades: “The PATH system is a vital connection in our region, and this work is crucial to ensuring it remains safe, reliable, and efficient for the thousands who depend on it every day.”
Executive Director Rick Cotton highlighted that a full closure enables faster completion of extensive repair work: “We recognize that a full station closure is disruptive... We are committed to full transparency throughout this process and providing an array of travel alternatives during the closure.”
PATH Director/General Manager Clarelle DeGraffe also addressed customer concerns: “We recognize the inconvenience our customers will experience during this period... we appreciate their patience and understanding as we work to make this 116-year-old rail network more reliable.”
To mitigate disruption, alternative travel options will be available. These include expanded ferry services with extended operating hours, frequent shuttle buses connecting riders to other PATH stations, increased NJ TRANSIT bus services, additional PATH train services at nearby stations during rush hours, and supplemental Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service.
Informational sessions about these changes will be held both in-person and virtually ahead of the closure. Details about schedules and fares can be found on relevant project websites.
This initiative is part of broader efforts under the PATH Forward program which includes various infrastructure improvements across several stations including Grove St., Newport, Exchange Pl., as well as ongoing projects between Journal Square and Harrison stations.
