Governor Phil Murphy, Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman have initiated New Jersey's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. This launch marks the beginning of a series of events and projects that will run from 2026 to 2033, highlighting New Jersey's historical significance in the American Revolution.
Governor Murphy stated, "New Jersey is not just home to revolutionary history—we are, to this day, the birthplace for revolutionary possibilities." He emphasized the state's leadership in various sectors and its diversity as key aspects of its identity.
Lieutenant Governor Way expressed her excitement about celebrating the nation's layered history with roots in New Jersey. "This shared legacy reflects our resilience and strength as united Americans," she said.
Congresswoman Watson Coleman highlighted New Jersey's pivotal role during the Revolutionary War, noting that "the Battle of Monmouth was a vital turning point to winning our nation's independence nearly 250 years ago."
The event featured performances by Washington Crossing Fifes and Drums and included participation from local students. Senator Cory Booker remarked on preserving historic sites as a way to inspire future generations with values like democracy and freedom.
Senator George Helmy praised efforts to showcase New Jersey's involvement in the American Revolution. He noted the state's critical role in battles such as Trenton and Princeton.
Rosie Rios, America250 Chair, welcomed New Jersey's participation in national celebrations. She acknowledged Governor Murphy’s leadership and the $25 million investment to revitalize Revolutionary War sites.
RevolutionNJ will lead these initiatives alongside other organizations. Programming includes interactive events like Tavern Talks, educational exhibitions such as Revolutionary Lives, race series at historic sites, and more. These activities aim to engage both locals and visitors with New Jersey’s rich history.
Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette announced capital investments in Revolutionary War sites across the state. A new visitor center at Washington Crossing State Park is among planned enhancements funded by Governor Murphy’s administration.
State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio emphasized this celebration as an opportunity to unify Americans around shared history. Diane Waugh Oliver from The New Jersey State Society Daughters of the American Revolution also expressed enthusiasm for participating in these commemorations.
The initiative involves multiple partnerships including RevolutionNJ—a collaboration between the New Jersey Historical Commission and Crossroads of the American Revolution Association—to plan for this significant anniversary.
