Governor Phil Murphy addressed the results of the 2024 election in a speech on November 6, 2024. Acknowledging the challenging emotions that accompany election outcomes, Murphy emphasized respect for democratic processes and acceptance of electoral results.
"The hallmark of our American democracy has always been our commitment to free and fair elections. It is the people, not the powerful, who choose our leaders," he stated. Murphy reiterated his commitment to serving all residents of New Jersey regardless of their voting choices.
The Governor noted voter turnout was significant, with figures expected between 4.2 and 4.3 million, comparing it favorably to past records set in the predominantly mail-in vote year of 2020.
Murphy acknowledged tighter margins in this election across states similar to New Jersey such as Illinois, New York, Maryland, and California, which saw a decrease in margin compared to previous elections.
He praised Vice President Harris and Governor Tim Walz for their campaign efforts aligned with many shared values of New Jersey. Looking forward, Murphy committed to collaborating with President Trump when possible for New Jersey's benefit while also pledging to resist any adverse actions from Washington against the state.
"Our commitment...is not to any person or party but to the people of New Jersey and to the rule of law," he declared. He recounted prior collaboration with Trump's administration during his first term on projects like the Portal North Bridge project and federal support during the pandemic.
Murphy urged unity despite divisions: "This is a nation that celebrates what unites us as much as what sets us apart."
In conclusion, he called upon citizens to remain engaged and active in shaping their communities positively: "The people of New Jersey have never stopped believing in our great American experiment."
