New Jersey joins global coalition with focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Governor Phil Murphy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Climate Group, making New Jersey the latest state to join the Under2 Coalition. The signing took place as part of a mission to the United Kingdom led by Choose New Jersey, a nonprofit business attraction organization. This MOU brings New Jersey into a global network focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Governor Murphy expressed commitment to New Jersey's climate goals, stating, “New Jersey has already established one of the most ambitious climate goals in the entire country: running New Jersey on 100% clean energy by 2035.” He emphasized collaboration with international partners like Climate Group for a sustainable future.

The Under2 Coalition now includes 17 U.S. states. The MOU encourages cooperation among members to support global climate initiatives and agreements such as the Paris Agreement (2015) and others aimed at promoting climate resilience and emission reduction.

Helen Clarkson, CEO of Climate Group, welcomed New Jersey's commitment. “Climate Group is proud to welcome New Jersey as the latest state that pledges to reduce emissions by activating every academic, industry, and economic resource at their disposal,” she said. She highlighted the importance of state-level leadership in driving necessary changes for climate action.

New Jersey's clean energy sector is notable for its employment figures and solar capacity achievements. Wesley Mathews, President and CEO of Choose New Jersey, stated that the state's incentive programs make it an ideal location for clean energy projects such as electric vehicles and offshore wind.
