The New Jersey Historic Trust has announced the availability of grant applications for the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund. Applications and supporting documents on USB drives must be submitted by April 18, 2024.
This year, grants will be offered under the Historic Site Management category for preservation planning initiatives, regional, municipal, and county planning, and heritage tourism. Grants are also available for preservation projects involving buildings. Eligible applicants include registered nonprofit organizations under 501c as well as municipal or state government agencies or counties. Properties must be listed or certified to be included in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places before August 1, 2024, to qualify for funding.
"Investing in the preservation and restoration of historic places is not just a financial commitment; it is also a testament to our dedication to safeguarding the roots of our common cultural heritage," said Acting Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez of the Department of Community Affairs (DCA). "By funding such projects, we are honoring the history, craftsmanship, and character of these historic properties for future generations."

Planning grants can be used for activities that help lay foundations for responsible management and successful long-term development and management of historical sites. This includes creating preservation plans, engineering studies or archaeological assessments. Heritage tourism initiatives may include visitor readiness surveys, signage, and linking recreational facilities. The Trust also offers grants for municipal, regional, and county planning projects that foster strong strategies and responsible management based on developing Local Historic Preservation Ordinances or Master Plan components.
The maximum planning grant application is $75,000 with a match requirement of one dollar for every three requested.
Preservation grants can cover construction expenses related to preserving historical properties plus professional fees necessary to prepare and complete construction projects. There are three levels within this type: Level I with a maximum request of $150,000 requiring two dollars matched per three requested; Level II allows up to $750,000 needing one-to-one matching funds; Level III or Multiphase starts at $500K minimum up till $750K per phase also requiring one-to-one matching funds enabling larger complex project financing over potentially three years if other conditions meet compliance standards—all backed by prior research like conservation plans/evaluations required beforehand.
