The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has awarded a $200,000 grant to the Borough of Madison as part of its Community Energy Plan Implementation (CEPI) Grant Program. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of local buildings, specifically targeting improvements for the Hartley Dodge Memorial and the 200-year-old Borough Hall.
Christine Guhl-Sadovy, NJBPU President, highlighted the program's goals: “The CEPI Program provides grants for communities to invest in clean energy and climate solutions.” She expressed gratitude towards Sustainable Jersey for their partnership and acknowledged Madison officials' efforts in utilizing grant funds to improve environmental conditions.
The funding will also support renovations of another historic building acquired by Madison, which is set to become the proposed Madison Senior Center. The project includes installing air source heat pumps for heating and cooling systems at both Hartley Dodge Memorial and Borough Hall. These upgrades are expected to improve comfort levels while reducing utility costs and carbon emissions.
Senator Anthony M. Bucco praised Madison's achievement as it becomes the first municipality in Morris County to receive a CEPI grant: “These projects embody preservation and progress, honoring our past as we build a sustainable future.”
Mayor Robert H. Conley shared his pride in receiving two Community Energy Plan Implementation Awards this year. He stated that these grants will facilitate electrification efforts at historic sites such as Hellar Center, aligning with New Jersey’s climate strategies: "Madison is committed to climate action...these projects represent yet another step forward."
Councilwoman Rachel Ehrlich outlined Madison’s approach underpinned by "Reduce, Replace, and Renew" principles aimed at decreasing energy use through efficient electric systems powered by renewable sources like solar installations planned for 2025.
Additionally, part of this funding will replace existing gas-fired systems with cold climate air-source heat pump equipment in Hartley Dodge Memorial Borough Hall alongside necessary ventilation enhancements.
Randall Solomon from Sustainable Jersey remarked on providing technical assistance throughout municipal participation: "We knew going into the project that community energy planning was beneficial...we are still following up with municipalities."
