Acting Governor Way has issued Executive Order No. 371, mandating that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff on November 19, 2024. This decision honors the memory of former State Senator Jim Wallwork, who passed away on October 23, 2024, at the age of 94.
Senator Wallwork's career began in the military as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He later served over ten years in the New Jersey National Guard, retiring with the rank of major. His political journey started in 1963 when he was elected to public office. He served in the General Assembly from 1964 to 1966 before moving to the State Senate.
During his time in the Senate, Wallwork held positions such as Senate Minority Whip and Assistant Minority Leader. He was known for advocating environmental initiatives like the Pinelands Preservation Act and played a pivotal role in establishing New Jersey’s first Advanced Life Support ambulances. Additionally, he was appointed by Governor Christine Todd Whitman as New Jersey’s Commissioner on the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor.
“Senator Wallwork was a dedicated public servant who served with integrity,” Acting Governor Way stated. “We offer our deepest condolences to his loved ones and we thank him for his years of dedicated service.”
Wallwork is survived by his daughter Lyric Winik; grandsons Nathaniel and Evan; nephews Matt and Mark Sheeleigh; and their families.
