New Jersey-India commission plans inaugural trip led by Lt Gov Tahesha Way

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State Tahesha Way will lead a delegation from the New Jersey-India Commission on a trip to India from December 8 to 16, 2024. The delegation plans to visit five cities over eight days: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, and New Delhi. The announcement was made by Lieutenant Governor Way during an event at Samudhra Restaurant in Franklin Park hosted by the New Jersey-India Commission.

Governor Phil Murphy previously visited India in September 2019 as the first sitting New Jersey governor to do so. That mission resulted in economic and educational ties being strengthened and secured over 1,200 new jobs through Indian companies expanding their presence in New Jersey. This upcoming trip aims to enhance economic relations with one of New Jersey's major trade partners while also fostering cultural and educational connections.

"As Secretary of State, I was delighted to welcome the Commission to my department and have been overseeing efforts to strengthen ties between New Jersey and India," said Lieutenant Governor Way. "New Jersey’s Indian American population continues to rapidly grow. Through our shared vision, we are committed to maximizing the potential of our relationship."

Wesley Mathews, Chair of the New Jersey-India Commission and President and CEO of Choose New Jersey stated, "India is one of New Jersey’s most important global partners for economic development, higher education, research collaboration, and cultural exchange. Building on the success of past initiatives, this mission is a pivotal opportunity to deepen our ties with one of the world's fastest-growing economies."

"India remains one of New Jersey’s key global partners," said Rajpal Bath, Executive Director of the New Jersey-India Commission. "Following Governor Murphy’s mission, and extensive outreach in the years since, we will continue to grow the relationship through the Commission."

The delegation's itinerary includes meetings with government officials and industry leaders from sectors such as higher education, life sciences, and technology. India is a significant foreign direct investor in New Jersey while Indian-Americans form a large part of its foreign-born residents.

Media interested in joining Lieutenant Governor Way on this trip should RSVP by November 29th.
