The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender has expressed agreement with the recommendations made by U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger following a critical report on the Trenton Police Department and the City of Trenton. The report highlighted issues of civil rights violations and unconstitutional policing.
A statement from Public Defender Sellitti emphasized, "We have seen firsthand the detrimental impact civil rights violations and unconstitutional policing have had on the people we represent." The office is looking forward to seeing changes that include measures to prevent excessive use of force, better documentation for stops, searches, and arrests, as well as accountability and discipline for officers who violate citizens' rights.
This response comes in light of efforts to address concerns within law enforcement practices in Trenton, aiming for improved relations between police officers and the community they serve.
