Berkeley College has been recognized as one of 471 institutions by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge for its efforts to boost nonpartisan student voter participation in the 2024 election. This recognition is part of a broader initiative that involves over 1,075 institutions and engages 10.8 million students across the United States.
Heather Eaton-Dwyer, Dean of Students and Equal Opportunity Officer at Berkeley College, stated on November 21 that earning this recognition will enhance students' awareness of civic engagement related to voting. "It reinforces how important students’ voting power is and honors the efforts and dedication of our student leaders who work passionately to educate and encourage their fellow students on the importance of exercising this fundamental civil right," she said.
To be honored as a Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting, Berkeley College completed several core actions: participating in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, sharing campus voting data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) with ALL IN, developing a democratic engagement action plan for 2024, and having a current signatory to ALL IN’s Higher Education Presidents’ Commitment to Full Student Voter Participation.
Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, executive director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, noted that intentional efforts by colleges lead to higher voter registration and turnout rates. She stated, “This year we saw more colleges than ever before step up their efforts to ensure that their students were registered and ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box.”
Throughout the year, Berkeley College's student leaders have worked with staff from Student Development and Campus Life on various initiatives aimed at increasing civic engagement among students. These include attending conferences like the New Jersey Voting Summit, partnering with organizations such as the League of Women Voters on campaigns like “Why Voting Matters,” launching peer-to-peer education initiatives like SAVE (Students Approaching Voter Engagement), and hosting events such as “Get to Know Your Ballot.”
