Walmart is set to close its Swedesboro Sam’s Club fulfillment facility in March 2025, marking the second recent warehouse closure in South Jersey. This information was disclosed through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) filed with state officials.
The Swedesboro warehouse, located in Gloucester County, will cease operations on March 7, impacting 113 employees. Earlier this year, Walmart also closed one of its two Pedrickstown fulfillment centers in Salem County, affecting 271 employees according to state WARN notices.
These closures are part of Walmart's ongoing strategy to modify its distribution model by consolidating online-order warehousing into several high-tech "next generation" fulfillment centers. These centers are currently operational in Greencastle, Pennsylvania; Lancaster, Texas; Joliet, Illinois; and McCordsville, Indiana. A new facility is planned for Stockton, California, set to open in 2026.
Walmart informed Yahoo Finance on November 27 that employees opting to transfer to the newer facilities would receive a $7,500 transfer bonus and relocation costs if eligible. Transferring employees will also be provided with on-the-job training for the advanced technology utilized at these sites.
Swedesboro employees affected by the closure have the option to apply for transfers to other distribution centers within New Jersey and Delaware.
A Walmart spokesperson confirmed plans to proceed with opening a new 700,000-square-foot perishable distribution center in Pilesgrove, New Jersey by 2027. This development is expected to create approximately 400 jobs in the area.
