Governor Phil Murphy has appointed Senator-elect Andy Kim to the United States Senate. This decision follows the certification of the 2024 General Election results on December 5 by the State Board of Canvassers and comes after Senator George Helmy's resignation, effective December 8.
"Today, I am appointing Senator-elect Andy Kim to the United States Senate so he can begin his term in office before the new year begins," stated Governor Murphy. He emphasized that this move would ensure a smooth transition for Kim into his new role.
Governor Murphy expressed gratitude towards outgoing U.S. Senator George Helmy for his service over the past three months and acknowledged Helmy's efforts in working with Kim for a seamless transition. He also congratulated Andy Kim on making history as New Jersey's first Asian American Senator and the nation's first Korean American Senator. "His election represents a proud milestone – not just for our great state, but for our entire country," Murphy noted.
Senator Andy Kim expressed his honor at representing New Jersey in the U.S. Senate, acknowledging it as a chance to pursue what remains an elusive dream for many residents. "It’s an honor to get to represent the state that gave my family a chance at the American Dream in the U.S. Senate," said Kim.
Before joining the Senate, Andy Kim served three terms representing New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District in the House of Representatives and held various public service roles under both Democratic and Republican administrations, including positions at USAID, Pentagon, State Department, White House National Security Council, and as an advisor in Afghanistan.
In his new role as senator, Kim is focused on national and economic security issues, promoting unity across America while combating corruption and ensuring democracy is inclusive of all voices. His agenda includes addressing affordability issues, boosting small businesses and innovation, supporting working families with fairness opportunities, and honoring commitments to military families and veterans.
Andy Kim is recognized as a dedicated husband and father to two young boys. As a son of South Korean immigrants, he feels humbled by becoming America's first Korean American elected senator.
