NJ Transit CEO Kevin Corbett resigns after seven years

Governor Phil Murphy has announced the resignation of NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kevin Corbett. After seven years at the helm, Corbett will transition to a new role in academia. He leaves behind a legacy as the third longest-serving CEO in NJ TRANSIT's 45-year history.

Corbett was appointed by Governor Murphy in 2018 as Executive Director and has been instrumental in enhancing New Jersey's mass transit system. His tenure saw improvements such as better customer service, modernized infrastructure, station renovations, and new rail car fleets.

Under his leadership, NJ TRANSIT achieved several milestones including the full implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC), progress on the Portal North Bridge replacement project, introduction of electric buses, restoration of locomotive engineers and bus operators' ranks, execution of a five-year Capital Plan, and recognition by the American Public Transportation Association as “North America’s Most Outstanding Public Transportation System.”

Governor Murphy praised Corbett's contributions: “As the most densely populated state...New Jersey disproportionately depends on mass transit...Kevin has worked in coordination with our federal government...to develop strategic plans...His leadership and service to the people of New Jersey has been unwavering.”

Corbett expressed gratitude for his role: “Serving as President & CEO of NJ TRANSIT has been the honor of a lifetime...I am profoundly grateful for the trust Governor Murphy placed in me...While I am excited about this next chapter in my life, my commitment to public transit and the communities we serve remains steadfast.”

Francis O’Connor, DOT Commissioner and Chair of NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors, commended Corbett: “Kevin has worked tirelessly over the last seven years transforming NJ TRANSIT’s long-term capital plan into one that will continue to deliver on moving the agency forward for years to come.”

NJ TRANSIT successfully managed transportation for major events like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour at MetLife Stadium and the Army-Navy game. These achievements underscore New Jersey's capability to host global events such as FIFA World Cup 2026.

Corbett's resignation is effective January 15, 2025. Details regarding his successor will be released soon.
