The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Board of Commissioners has approved a new minimum wage policy for workers at John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International airports. This decision follows a month-long public comment period and aims to provide annual wage increases tied to the regional cost of living.
Starting in January 2025, airport workers will see three upfront increases of $0.75 in January 2025, July 2025, and January 2026. From January 1, 2027, further increases will be linked to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) three-year moving average for the Northeast region. The policy ensures that wages automatically increase to $25 by September 2032 if not reached through CPI adjustments by January 2032.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Our airports are not just transportation hubs but also key drivers of regional prosperity, supporting local communities and local workforces.” He added that structured wage increases would enhance customer service by boosting worker morale.
Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority, highlighted the benefits: “This policy underscores our respect for the hard work of dedicated airport employees who serve the traveling public across our region.”
To mitigate increased costs for businesses operating at these airports, a revision to concession pricing policy was also approved. Concessionaires can now charge up to 15 percent more than local off-airport prices for comparable products and add an employee benefits surcharge not exceeding 3 percent.
Routine monitoring will ensure compliance with fair market pricing policies at airport concessionaires. The agency remains committed to transforming its airports into best-in-class gateways while maintaining high standards in customer service and experience.
Newark Liberty’s Terminal A received recognition as the world’s best new airport terminal in Skytrax's 2024 awards. Similarly, LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B earned accolades in 2023 along with five-star ratings for facilities and service from Skytrax based on traveler surveys.
