Americans for Prosperity (AFP), a prominent grassroots organization, has expressed approval of the recent congressional passage of H.R. 115, known as The Midnight Rules Relief Act. This legislation, introduced by Congressman Andy Biggs, aims to enhance congressional oversight over federal agency rulemaking.
The act seeks to expand and streamline the Congressional Review Act (CRA), thereby strengthening Congress's ability to address regulations deemed excessive. Specifically, it permits multiple resolutions of disapproval to be reviewed simultaneously and extends the retrospective review period to include regulations from the past year.
Brent Gardner, AFP's Chief Government Affairs Officer, stated: "For too long, Congress has been handcuffed by cumbersome processes that limit its ability to serve as a check on the administrative state. The Midnight Rules Relief Act brings much-needed reform to the Congressional Review Act, allowing lawmakers to swiftly repeal harmful regulations that stifle economic opportunity for all Americans. Supporting this legislation is a critical step toward restoring Congress’s Article I authority to set policy and ensuring accountability in the rulemaking process."
The enactment of The Midnight Rules Relief Act is seen as a means for Congress and the incoming administration to counteract what AFP describes as detrimental regulations from the Biden administration. The organization believes this will aid in addressing the nation's cost of living issues and stimulate economic growth.
Earlier in the week, AFP released a Key Vote Alert urging lawmakers to back The Midnight Rules Relief Act. This vote will be included in AFP's annual legislative scorecard aimed at holding legislators accountable for their positions on policies that promote economic freedom and government accountability.
