Henry Coleman and Jermaine Toney are participating as members of the Economic Justice Committee within the New Jersey Reparations Council (NJRC). This council is convened by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and co-chaired by Taja-Nia Henderson from Rutgers Law School and Khalil Gibran Muhammad from Harvard Kennedy School. The NJRC is a pioneering commission focused on addressing New Jersey's historical involvement in slavery and its ongoing effects on Black residents.
The council represents a collaboration among experts from various fields, organized into nine committees. Each committee will tackle different aspects of slavery's lasting impact in New Jersey. These include topics such as the history of slavery in the state, public narrative and memory, economic justice, segregation, democracy, public safety and justice, health equity, environmental justice, and faith and Black resistance.
