Americans for Prosperity-Kansas (AFP-KS) has released a video showcasing their efforts in passing the REINS Act, HB 2648, which was initially vetoed by Governor Laura Kelly. Despite this setback, AFP-KS successfully garnered enough votes to overturn the veto and enact the legislation requiring a review of all major government regulations.
AFP-KS State Director Liz Patton emphasized the need for checks and balances within Kansas state government. "We realized something needs to be done to reset the balance of power," Patton stated. She questioned the effectiveness of having a state legislature if executive agencies have unchecked law-making powers.
State Representative Barb Wasinger highlighted concerns about bureaucrats effectively legislating through regulation, impacting Kansas businesses. "I talked to Elizabeth and AFP and said we’ve got to do something," Wasinger shared.
State Senator Kellie Warren, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and Regulations, noted that AFP's involvement significantly influenced legislative discussions around the REINS Act. "It changed the conversation dramatically," Warren said.
The passage of this legislation marks a significant achievement for AFP-KS as they aim to replicate similar efforts in over a dozen other states.
