Jon Carnegie retires after 25 years leading Voorhees Transportation Center

After 25 years of service, Jon Carnegie is retiring from his role as Executive Director of the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC). Throughout his career, Carnegie has been involved in various research and planning projects focusing on transit-oriented development, transportation equity, senior mobility, transport security, emergency management, and evacuation planning.

Reflecting on his time at VTC, Carnegie said, "I think one of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been the opportunity to spend so much of it at the Voorhees Transportation Center. I helped to grow the center into what it is today."

Carnegie acknowledged both the rewards and challenges in transportation research. He noted that while there is a constant flow of funding for projects, competition within New Jersey and Rutgers can be intense. "It’s just inherently competitive," he stated.

Discussing changes in transportation planning over his career, Carnegie highlighted an increased focus on equity and advancements in technology such as geographic information systems (GIS) and data processing software. However, he expressed concern about fully addressing rapid technological advancements like AI and automated vehicles.

Looking ahead, Carnegie advised future transportation planners to remain optimistic and forward-thinking. "Stay optimistic, forward-thinking, and interested in advancing the things that are important to you," he encouraged.

In retirement, Carnegie plans to travel across the continental U.S. in a renovated camper van and explore Europe. He looks forward to enjoying activities without deadlines.

Among his notable projects are Safe Mobility at Any Age, which addressed older adults' mobility needs; NJ Division of Disability Services Five-Year Transportation Plan; Driver’s License Suspension Impacts and Fairness Study; and collaboration with state agencies for evacuation plans during Hurricanes Irene and Sandy.

Carnegie fondly recalled a strategic planning retreat five years ago as his favorite memory at VTC. "The way the facilitator organized it was fantastic," he said.
