The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a travel advisory for December 20 to 22, urging travelers to plan ahead due to lane closures at the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, and Lincoln Tunnel. These closures are part of ongoing construction projects and necessary repairs.
At John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), a $19 billion redevelopment project is underway. The Port Authority advises air travelers to use mass transit options such as MTA subways or buses and the Long Island Rail Road for easier access to the airport. Motorists are encouraged to utilize the free drop-off, pickup, and waiting lot at Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain JFK station.
Specific lane closures include:
- **George Washington Bridge**: All eastbound lanes on the lower level will be closed from 9:30 p.m. on December 20 until 8 a.m. on December 21. Two westbound lanes on the upper level Trans-Manhattan Expressway will also be closed during this time.
- **Holland Tunnel**: The New Jersey-bound tube will be closed from 11:59 p.m. on December 20 until 9 a.m. on December 21 for Superstorm Sandy-related repairs.
- **Lincoln Tunnel**: The center tube will be closed from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. on December 21.
Airports are also affected by these developments:
- At JFK's Terminal 4, "the ramp from the inbound JFK Expressway is modified due to construction." For-hire vehicle pickups have been relocated, with shuttle services provided.
- At LaGuardia Airport, public transit is encouraged with fare-free Q70 bus service.
Travelers using Newark Liberty International Airport should note that all rental car operations now take place at the new consolidated rental car center within Parking A garage.
PATH train services will operate every 20 minutes between Journal Square and Hoboken due to track work from December 21 to December 22.
