Flags lowered in New Jersey for former President Jimmy Carter

Governor Phil Murphy has issued an executive order to lower the U.S. and New Jersey flags in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on January 28, 2025.

Jimmy Carter served as the 39th President of the United States and was known for his dedication to human rights, diplomacy, and environmental justice. His presidency was marked by significant achievements such as the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel and efforts towards energy reform.

Carter's career began with managing his family's farm and a peanut business after serving in the United States Navy. He entered politics in 1962 when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. Later, he became Governor of Georgia, where he worked on civil rights issues and modernizing state government.

After leaving office, Carter founded the Carter Center to advance human rights and alleviate suffering worldwide. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity alongside his wife Rosalynn Carter, contributing significantly to housing projects including those in Union Beach, New Jersey following Superstorm Sandy. In recognition of his global peace efforts, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Governor Murphy stated: “President Jimmy Carter embodied the belief that public service is a lifelong calling.” He added that Carter dedicated his life to charitable efforts globally and expressed gratitude for his service while offering condolences to his family.
