Governor Murphy announced a new policy during the State of the State address, ensuring full salary coverage for New Jersey state workers on paid family leave. This initiative will cover the remaining portion of salaries for those recovering from pregnancy or childbirth and bonding with new children. Currently, Family Leave Insurance benefits offer partial pay at 85% of average wages, capped at $1,081 per week in 2025.
In response to this announcement, Yarrow Willman-Cole, Director of the Workplace Justice Program at New Jersey Citizen Action (NJCA), expressed approval. "We’re pleased Governor Murphy is focusing his attention on paid leave," Willman-Cole stated. She emphasized the importance of equitable access to paid leave in improving health outcomes and reducing maternal mortality rates.
Willman-Cole highlighted that full pay during leave is crucial for preventing financial instability among workers and their families, particularly lower-income individuals. "Many employers, including New Jersey Citizen Action, have implemented this practice," she noted, expressing hope that more employers will follow suit to foster a fairer workforce.
The NJCA also urged collaboration between the Governor and Legislature to enhance job protections for all residents taking leave. They stressed that since all workers contribute to the state's paid family leave program, it is vital that these benefits remain equitable and accessible.
