ACLU-NJ responds positively but cautiously to Gov. Murphy’s state address

In response to Governor Murphy's 2025 State of the State address, ACLU-NJ Policy Director Sarah Fajardo issued a statement highlighting New Jersey's progress in civil rights and liberties under Murphy's leadership. She emphasized the importance of modernizing the state's parole system to advance justice, promote public safety, and recognize positive conduct. Fajardo noted that technical violations have long disrupted individuals' efforts to rebuild their lives and expressed hope that these changes, along with Gov. Murphy's commitment to granting categorical clemency, will continue New Jersey's history of decarceration.

Fajardo also addressed reproductive rights, contrasting New Jersey's approach with other states that are rolling back access to abortion. She stated that New Jersey would begin stockpiling mifepristone and advancing policies to remove out-of-pocket costs for abortion care as steps to protect reproductive freedom.

Furthermore, she called for prioritizing legislation that strengthens immigrants' rights in light of President-elect Trump's promise of mass deportations. Fajardo urged New Jersey to be a national leader by adopting a comprehensive approach to advancing civil rights without sacrificing one goal for another or waiting for political convenience.

She concluded by emphasizing New Jersey's history of ambitious public policy and expressing readiness to work with Gov. Murphy and lawmakers to protect all residents as the country prepares for Trump's next term.
