Governor Murphy announces legislation targeting technical parole violation reform

Today, Governor Phil Murphy announced new legislation aimed at reducing the number of individuals re-incarcerated for technical parole violations. This announcement was made during his seventh annual State of the State address. Currently, an estimated 10 percent of New Jersey's prison population, or between 1,100 and 1,200 parolees, are in state custody due to these violations.

In response to the governor's announcement, New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP) issued a statement. Marleina Ubel, Senior Policy Analyst at NJPP, commented on the significance of this legislative move: "This announcement marks a critical step toward building a more equitable and effective justice system in New Jersey."

Ubel emphasized that by reducing re-incarceration for technical violations, the policy would tackle unnecessary incarceration and promote stability for those reentering communities. Additionally, it is expected to enhance government efficiency by decreasing the number of people entering the New Jersey Department of Corrections.

"We look forward to hearing how this policy would extend relief to the over 1,000 people currently incarcerated for such violations," Ubel added. She praised Governor Murphy's leadership in advancing this reform as it demonstrates a commitment to justice and second chances.
