Bloustein School's Nashia Basit named 2025 NLC-NJ fellow

Nashia Basit, a graduate student at the Bloustein School, has been selected as one of nine students to join the 2025 New Leaders Council New Jersey (NLC-NJ) fellowship. The NLC-NJ is part of a national organization that fosters inclusive leadership across various sectors, aiming for social and political transformation.

Mayrose Wegmann, Statewide Director of NLC-NJ and Northwest Region Director at the New Jersey Education Association, commented on the new class: “The 2025 class is a reflection of New Jersey’s greatest strength – our diversity. The future of our workplaces, our movements, and our democracy is in great hands with this incoming class of changemakers. This is an incredibly talented and inspiring group of leaders.”

For over a decade, NLC-NJ has conducted a fellowship institute focused on leadership development. The 2025 program will begin in January and last six months. It includes training in skills building, strategic communications, organizing, finance and fundraising, coalition building, public policy, and equity.

The incoming fellows reflect diversity with half identifying as women and more than three-fourths as Black, Indigenous or People of Color. They represent various regions within New Jersey and work across multiple sectors including nonprofit organizations and government.

Rob Matos-Moran from NLC-NJ remarked: “These Fellows represent just how deep the bench is in New Jersey. This year’s cohort is comprised of extraordinary leaders committed to strengthening their communities and driving our state forward. We warmly welcome and congratulate the 2025 Class of Fellows to the expansive NLC-NJ community.”

Basit serves as Governor’s Fellow for the Department of Labor focusing on enforcement and compliance strategies. She holds dual master’s degrees from Rutgers University in Public Policy and Urban Planning with a focus on social policy/community development.
