The ACLU of New Jersey has announced the election of David Litt as its newest board member. Litt, known for his work as a bestselling author and political commentator, joins the board during a significant period marked by Donald Trump's second presidential term.
"We are thrilled to have David join our board," stated Marc Beebe, President of the ACLU-NJ Board of Trustees. "His experience will be invaluable to our organization, especially as our nation grapples with renewed attacks on fundamental freedoms."
Litt's background includes being a New York Times bestselling author and a semi-finalist for the James Thurber Prize for American Humor. He served as a senior speechwriter for former President Barack Obama and was recognized as "the comic muse for the president" due to his contributions to the White House Correspondents' Dinner. His writings have appeared in prominent publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post.
Amol Sinha, Executive Director of ACLU-NJ, expressed enthusiasm about Litt's appointment: “I am proud to welcome David to our Board of Trustees at a time when we are facing unprecedented threats to civil rights and liberties.” Sinha added that he looks forward to working with Litt amid another Trump administration.
In addition to writing speeches and jokes for political figures and philanthropists, Litt has been featured on CNN and MSNBC. He also served as head writer and producer for Funny Or Die D.C. from 2016 to 2018.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board of the ACLU of New Jersey,” said Litt. “For 65 years, the ACLU-NJ has defended liberty and justice guided by the vision of a fair and equitable New Jersey for all – I've long admired that mission and am excited to help make it reality.”
As part of his role on the board, Litt will support efforts to uphold individual rights guaranteed by state and federal constitutions across various platforms including courts, legislatures, and communities.
