The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the closure of the PATH Hoboken station from 11:59 p.m. on January 30 to 5 a.m. on February 25. This closure is part of the $430 million PATH Forward program, which aims to improve service reliability through significant track and station upgrades.
During this period, essential repairs will be made to the 117-year-old system. The full closure allows for expedited completion of track work, including replacing in-station tracks, upgrading the track switching network outside the station, and repairing 4,500 linear feet of track leading to the station. Station improvements will include refurbishing concrete platforms and replacing stairways.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole stated that while they understand the impact on commuters, "this critical work is necessary to ensure the PATH system remains safe and reliable for years to come." Executive Director Rick Cotton emphasized efforts to make disruptions manageable by providing clear travel alternatives.
PATH Director Clarelle DeGraffe noted that while challenges are expected during the closure, their focus is on ensuring riders have necessary information about alternate travel options. NJ TRANSIT President Kris Kolluri highlighted collaboration with regional transit agencies as crucial for maintaining connectivity.
Armand Pohan of NY Waterway expressed commitment to providing continued service during construction, while Joseph Lucci from Charter Linkz emphasized their role in minimizing commuter impact through bus bridge services.
Alternative transportation options will include expanded ferry services, frequent shuttle buses connecting Hoboken riders to other PATH stations, increased NJ TRANSIT bus frequency on Route No. 126, additional PATH trains at Newport and Exchange Pl stations, and enhanced Hudson-Bergen Light Rail services.
The PATH Forward program also includes rehabilitation projects at Grove St., Newport, and Exchange Pl stations. Rehabilitation work at Grove St., which began in 2024, was completed ahead of schedule.
