NJCA Executive Director Dena Mottola Jaborska has voiced concerns over a recent White House order to halt federal grants and loans. In a statement, Jaborska highlighted the potential negative impact on New Jersey residents, emphasizing that many individuals and organizations rely on federal funding for essential services.
"This order to halt federal funding will have devastating consequences for millions of New Jerseyans, including many that New Jersey Citizen Action directly serves," Jaborska stated. She noted that federal grants are crucial for preventing foreclosures, supporting first-time homebuyers, combating housing discrimination, and providing free tax filing assistance. These investments contribute to building stronger communities and families in New Jersey.
Jaborska also pointed out the broader implications for the nonprofit sector in New Jersey. Organizations serving seniors, people with disabilities, children, women, victims of domestic violence, and those involved in mental health services could face significant challenges if funding is reduced or eliminated.
"It's unconscionable that the Trump administration should halt these investments—which have already been approved by Congress—for American taxpayers while considering further tax cuts for billionaires and corporations," she added. According to Jaborska, this policy contradicts claims of advancing a stronger America or reducing inflation's financial burden on citizens. Instead, it may increase difficulties for New Jerseyans in managing healthcare costs, housing expenses, and basic needs.
Jaborska called on all New Jersey members of Congress to oppose the order and advocate for the continuation of funding. "We urge our lawmakers to stand with us, and all New Jerseyans, for the programs that make our state stronger," she concluded.
