New Jersey Citizen Action and New Jersey Appleseed have expressed strong disapproval of the Trump administration's decision to remove Rohit Chopra from his position as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Under Chopra, the CFPB focused on defending consumers against financial malpractice, including predatory lending and discrimination.
The agency has worked to reduce junk fees by banks, enhance market transparency, penalize harmful financial practices, and protect consumer data. Additionally, it has addressed housing discrimination issues such as redlining and illegal foreclosures.
Beverly Brown Ruggia of NJCA stated that Chopra's leadership provided many Americans with improved financial stability. She criticized the administration for prioritizing corporate profits over consumer welfare. Laura Waddell, also from NJCA, emphasized the CFPB's role in safeguarding New Jersey residents from medical debt impacts on credit scores. Both urged local leaders to oppose the firing.
Renee Steinhagen from NJ Appleseed noted that although Chopra's dismissal was expected, its negative impact should not be underestimated. She highlighted concerns about potential regulatory rollbacks that could harm consumers.
