Port Authority issues travel advisory amid major infrastructure projects

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a travel advisory for the week of February 7 to 13, urging travelers to plan ahead due to lane closures and service changes at key transit points. The agency highlights ongoing construction at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which is part of a $19 billion redevelopment project. Travelers are advised to use mass transit options such as MTA New York City Transit subway or buses, or MTA Long Island Rail Road for airport access.

Specific lane closures are planned at the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, and Lincoln Tunnel during this period. For instance, all eastbound lanes on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge will be closed from 10 p.m. on February 7 to 8 a.m. on February 8. Additionally, the New Jersey-bound tube of the Holland Tunnel will be closed multiple nights due to Superstorm Sandy-related repairs.

At JFK Airport, motorists should anticipate delays or reroutes due to detours or closures within the airport's roadway network. "These roadway changes are required to accommodate the work underway to transform JFK into a world-class global gateway," according to the Port Authority.

The advisory also emphasizes using mass transit for airport travel and pre-booking parking spaces at Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and JFK Airport to avoid peak period surcharges and ensure availability.

At Newark Liberty International Airport, all rental car operations have moved to a new consolidated center within Parking A garage. The facility connects directly with terminals B and C via AirTrain Newark.

LaGuardia Link Q70 bus service remains fare-free year-round as part of an initiative announced by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in April 2022.

The Hoboken PATH station closure continues through February 25 for critical repairs. During this time, alternative travel options include expanded ferry services and shuttle buses.
