Walmart has announced plans to lay off 481 corporate employees at its Hoboken offices, as detailed in a WARN notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The retailer's decision comes after a leaked company memo indicated job eliminations and office closures.
The memo revealed that Walmart is closing its North Carolina office and requesting employees from Hoboken and other smaller locations to move to Arkansas and California. Chief People Officer Donna Morris explained the changes, stating, "We are making these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding." She added that the review process led to role eliminations as part of efforts to streamline operations.
According to New Jersey law, companies must submit a WARN notice when planning layoffs affecting 50 or more workers within a 30-day period. Walmart's filing indicates that the affected employees will face job termination on June 13.
