Temple Beth Sholom sold after over 60 years; new owner plans renovations

Newmark Associates Commercial Real Estate has announced the sale of Temple Beth Sholom, located at 40-25 Fairlawn Avenue in Fair Lawn. The property includes a 28,000-square-foot building situated on approximately two acres and has served as a place of worship, community gathering space, and preschool for over 60 years.

Mary Swatek, vice president of Newmark Associates, facilitated the transaction on behalf of the seller. She managed communications and negotiations with various stakeholders including the temple's sales committee, executive committee, board of directors, and the local community. Swatek's expertise in commercial real estate and sensitivity to religious institutions' needs were crucial in handling the complex aspects of the transaction which concluded with multiple offers. The financial details of the sale have not been disclosed.

Jeffrey Herrmann, an attorney at Cohn Lifland Pearlman Herrmann and Knopf who is also a board member and legal counsel for Temple Beth Sholom stated, “It was truly a historic day for the synagogue.” He added that “this sale will help perpetuate our legacy for decades," commending Mary Swatek for her role: “Mary did a fabulous job in trying circumstances. She helped to keep the process going and dealt with all the bumps in the road along the way.”

The Jewish Link reported that Temple Beth Sholom's congregation merged with other conservative Jewish congregations in 2024. They now worship at Congregation B’nai Sholom/Fair Lawn Jewish Center on Norma Avenue. The buyer identified by this publication is Bris Avrohom of Fair Lawn, which plans to renovate the site into a modern facility dedicated to Jewish education, events, and community life.
