Governor Phil Murphy has announced appointments to the newly established Governor’s Economic Council, which aims to foster collaboration between New Jersey's business community and state government leaders. The Council, created under Executive Order 369 signed on October 29, 2024, is designed to address issues crucial to both public and private sectors with a focus on economic growth.
Governor Murphy emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: “Convening this Council is another step in our commitment to building a high-growth economy driven by technology and innovation.” He added that the council will facilitate ongoing collaboration to achieve shared economic objectives.
The Council's public members bring expertise from various fields such as business, economics, land use, environment, and trade across New Jersey. Notable appointees include Tom Bracken from the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, Christina Renna from the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey, Carlos Medina from the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, among others. These members were appointed by Council Co-Chairs Eric Brophy and Tim Sullivan.
Tom Bracken expressed his enthusiasm for his appointment: “I am honored to have been chosen as a public appointee to Governor Murphy’s Economic Council. I look forward to working with the Administration and my fellow appointees...in establishing a forum that has the potential of producing significant economic growth.”
Christina M. Renna highlighted regional representation: “Southern New Jersey is unique and has a very different economic landscape than our northern brethren...I am humbled by the opportunity to assure that the region’s economic opportunities are communicated.”
Carlos Medina noted the significance of Hispanic contributions: “New Jersey is blessed with a strong Hispanic Gross Domestic Product exceeding 100 billion dollars annually.”
Additionally, an internal Development Coordination Committee has been formed within the Council. This subcommittee will work on streamlining reviews for complex development projects and enhancing communication among governmental entities involved in financing and permitting processes.
The Development Coordination Committee includes key figures such as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Economic Growth and other state officials who will report recommended policies or reforms aimed at reducing barriers to development.
