Vincent Lo Re named director at Rutgers' Center for Pharmacoepidemiology

Rutgers University has appointed Vincent Lo Re as the director of the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Treatment Science (PETS), part of the Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research (IFH). This decision follows an international search for a suitable candidate.

Lo Re is recognized globally in pharmacoepidemiology research. He is an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus on chronic viral hepatitis infection, HIV/viral hepatitis coinfection, and drug-induced liver injury. His work includes pioneering electronic health care data usage to study liver diseases and developing computable phenotypes for various liver-related conditions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lo Re worked with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Sentinel System to assess COVID-related complications. His recent studies have explored drug-induced liver injury's impact, marking significant advances in this field.

Brian Strom, chancellor of Rutgers Health, expressed his enthusiasm: “I am delighted to welcome to Rutgers, the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, and PETS, a leader as superb and prominent as Dr. Lo Re.” Tobias Gerhard, director of IFH and founder of PETS in 2017 added: “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Lo Re as the new director of PETS... I’m confident that under his leadership, PETS will firmly establish itself as one of the world’s leading research centers in the field of pharmacoepidemiology.”

Lo Re brings over 15 years of experience utilizing healthcare data with more than 200 published papers. He has held significant roles including president of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in 2022 and chairing various committees related to drug safety.

Expressing gratitude for his appointment, Lo Re stated: “I’m honored to have been selected as director of PETS... I look forward to working with schools and departments across Rutgers to recruit stellar faculty capable of conducting a broad range of rigorous research.”

His educational background includes degrees from Georgetown University and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania where he also received numerous awards recognizing his contributions to epidemiology.
