PACT: Litigation abuse linked to higher prices, spurring legal reform efforts

Protecting American Consumers Together (PACT) has announced the results of a nationwide survey indicating that voters perceive lawsuit abuse as a significant factor contributing to rising prices and are advocating for reforms. The announcement was made in a press release on March 4.

According to PACT, the rising cost of living remains a primary concern for American voters. The poll revealed that 86% of respondents reported an increase in their cost of living over the past year, with 56% noting it had risen significantly. "Voters across America believe their cost of living has gone up over the last 12 months, and federal reforms curbing lawsuit abuse are a great first step to deliver on this promise," said Lauren Zelt, Executive Director of PACT.

The Institute for Legal Reform reports that the costs associated with lawsuits in the U.S. tort system continue to escalate, imposing financial burdens on households and businesses. In New Jersey alone, tort costs reached $18.99 billion in 2022, translating to $5,525 per household and accounting for 2.5% of the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With an annual tort cost growth rate of 7.1%, these expenses are expected to rise further, exacerbating financial pressure on consumers and businesses.

According to its website, PACT is a national advocacy organization classified as a 501(c)(4), focused on consumer protection and legal system reform. The group aims to combat lawsuit abuse and promote legal transparency through policy advocacy and public awareness campaigns. PACT engages in legislative efforts, media outreach, and educational initiatives to advocate for a fairer legal system.
