The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has announced new initiatives aimed at enhancing the film and digital media workforce in the state. The NJEDA Board has approved the New Jersey Film Works Grant Program and established partnerships with Montclair State University and Brookdale Community College to boost workforce development in these sectors.
Tim Sullivan, NJEDA Chief Executive Officer, stated, "Under Governor Phil Murphy’s leadership, New Jersey has reclaimed its status as a leading hub for film and television production." He emphasized the state's commitment to equipping residents with necessary skills for opportunities in the industry.
The $3 million Film Works Grant Program will offer grants up to $750,000 to entities providing training, internships, apprenticeships, and learning opportunities. The program targets residents of Overburdened Communities and expects to award grants to about six applicants including nonprofits, educational institutions, and labor unions. A Notice of Funding Availability is anticipated in Spring 2025.
In collaboration with Brookdale Community College, NJEDA will provide $1 million for the New Jersey Film Academy initiative. This partnership aims to create career pathways for students and underserved populations while offering tuition assistance and scholarships.

Additionally, an MOU with Montclair State University will fund the construction of the MIX Lab at Dreamscape Learn facility. Scheduled to open in July 2026, it will feature advanced virtual reality education tools.
Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell expressed gratitude: “Montclair thanks Governor Murphy and the NJEDA for empowering us to prepare the next generation of creators that will support New Jersey’s growing film, television and media industry.”

The state has seen increased activity due to enhancements in tax credit programs attracting numerous productions. Jon Crowley from New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission noted that these developments position residents well for upcoming economic opportunities.
