The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, in collaboration with Revel, has inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This development significantly increases the airport's EV charging capacity, more than doubling the number of available chargers to 46. The newly installed 24 chargers were funded by Revel and Con Edison through its PowerReady program, which provides incentives for electric vehicle infrastructure.
Located within JFK's for-hire vehicle hold lot, the charging station is accessible via the Van Wyck Expressway or Belt Parkway. This expansion supports the Port Authority's sustainability initiatives aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Traditional fast chargers are expected to facilitate the transition from gas-powered to electric vehicles and contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 3,720 metric tons annually.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized the importance of expanding EV charging infrastructure as a step towards reducing emissions: “As we work toward a cleaner, more sustainable future, expanding access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a crucial step in reducing emissions.”
Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority, highlighted the agency's commitment: “The Port Authority and its private partners like Revel are leading the charge in building a net-zero future... More access to electric vehicle charging equipment helps advance our sustainability goals and reaffirms our agency’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”
With these additions, JFK now offers 46 operational EV fast-charging ports around-the-clock. This infrastructure aims to reduce wait times for charging and improve traffic flow at the airport. The availability of such facilities is critical in promoting the shift towards electric vehicles.
Revel plans further expansion with an upcoming installation of 48 fast-charging ports near LaGuardia Airport at East Elmhurst, Queens. This site will be one of the largest public fast-charging lots near an airport in the nation.
Frank Reig, co-founder & CEO of Revel stated: “Reliable fast charging at New York’s airports... will make or break our city’s electrification mandate.” NYC Taxi & Limousine Commissioner David Do also noted: “Our airports are by far the biggest trip generators for hardworking TLC drivers.”
Monil Malhotra from Kempower Inc., which manufactured Revel's chargers, expressed support for this initiative: “We are proud to support the expansion of EV infrastructure at JFK Airport...” Raghu Sudhakara from Con Edison added that their PowerReady incentive program aids this transition: “We’re proud that our PowerReady incentive program is enabling... helping to make the transition to electric vehicles more accessible.”
The Port Authority continues efforts beyond EV infrastructure with various sustainability projects across its airports including solar arrays and electrifying ground service equipment.
Revel was founded in Brooklyn in 2018 and is known for providing public EV fast charging services in New York City alongside operating an all-electric rideshare platform.
