GEODIS Logistics has announced further layoffs at its Monroe Township distribution facility, with 334 workers set to lose their jobs this summer. This brings the total number of job losses at the site to 426. The layoffs are detailed in a WARN notice filed with the state this month.
The company had previously announced that 92 workers would be laid off effective April 27. The new WARN notice states that the remaining employees will be affected by July 31, coinciding with the closure of the facility on Costco Drive. GEODIS spokesperson Lauren McKirgan explained to Freight Waves that the closure is due to a key customer relocating operations to another GEODIS facility in eastern Pennsylvania.
In other workforce reductions within New Jersey, Novartis plans to lay off 427 workers at its East Hanover U.S. headquarters between June 13 and October 24, as per a March WARN notice. Last year, Novartis announced cuts affecting 139 positions from February to August, also noted in a previous WARN notice. A Novartis spokesperson told Fierce Pharma that these reductions are linked to changes in its cardiovascular commercialization model. Additionally, Novartis' drug Entresto is facing potential loss of U.S. market exclusivity following a patent expiration in July.
JOANN fabric stores have also filed for bankruptcy and are conducting going-out-of-business sales nationwide. Their March WARN notice indicated that 262 employees across various New Jersey counties would be laid off between May 29 and June 12.
These announcements add to several major layoffs recorded in New Jersey for the year, as listed in March's state WARN notices.
