The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the opening of a second sensory room at Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal A. This development is aimed at enhancing the travel experience for neurodivergent travelers and those on the autism spectrum. The new post-security sensory room complements an existing pre-screening room, providing a seamless journey from curb to gate.
Terminal A, recognized as the best new airport terminal globally by Skytrax in 2024, offers various passenger amenities. These include dining options, local artwork, and a children's play area. The addition of sensory rooms aligns with its commitment to providing inclusive and comfortable travel experiences.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole stated, "We’re proud that Newark Liberty’s Terminal A now sets a new standard for accessibility and comfort in air travel." He highlighted the importance of features such as dedicated TSA support and amenities like meditation rooms.
Vice Chairman Jeffrey Lynford emphasized how these facilities could transform travel for families with neurodivergent members. "These sensory rooms... can make the difference between a stressful journey and an empowering one," he said.
The post-screening sensory room features an underwater theme inspired by New Jersey's coastal heritage. It includes interactive elements like bubble tubes and sea life projections. An aircraft cabin replica within the room allows travelers to simulate boarding experiences.
Executive Director Rick Cotton reiterated the agency's focus on accessibility: "As we redevelop our airports into world-class facilities, accessibility, comfort, and seamless travel are at the heart of every decision we make."
Michael Kunz, CEO of Munich Airport NJ LLC, expressed his commitment to enhancing passenger experiences through art displays and diverse retail options.
Eliza Bozenski from Anderson Center for Autism praised the initiative: "You’re giving them an opportunity to leave their homes... in the safest space they can stay."
The Port Authority plans to incorporate similar facilities across its other airports. At Newark Liberty alone, additional spaces like meditation rooms are available alongside business centers equipped with essential resources.
Across all commercial airports managed by the Port Authority—including JFK and LaGuardia—efforts continue towards creating inclusive environments with prayer areas, meditation spaces, sensory pods or chapels available depending on location needs. They also participate in programs like Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard which discreetly indicates invisible disabilities requiring extra assistance from staff members upon request by travelers needing additional patience during their journeys through these terminals.
