ACLU-NJ urges Governor Murphy to veto controversial new bill

In response to the recent decision by the New Jersey Legislature to pass bill S3507/A4652, the ACLU-NJ has expressed its concerns. Interim Policy Director Jim Sullivan released a statement regarding the implications of the bill, highlighting how it could affect fundamental freedoms.

Sullivan stated: "S3507/A4652 is overbroad, vague, and risks undermining fundamental freedoms protected under the First Amendment, including the right to protest and assembly." He further explained that while the bill aims to enhance community safety, it misses its objective. According to Sullivan, the legislation may lead to increased mass incarceration and disproportionately impact Black and brown communities.

The ACLU-NJ's stance includes a call for action from Governor Murphy. Sullivan concluded the statement by urging, “Given lawmakers have failed to amend the bill in ways that would safeguard civil rights and liberties, we urge Governor Murphy to veto S3507/A4652.”

The bill's passage has sparked discussion about its potential effects on civil rights and community safety in New Jersey.
