The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has reported its third-busiest February ever for its commercial airports, with 9.6 million travelers using the facilities. Overall passenger numbers for January and February 2025 reached 20.3 million, representing a slight increase from the same period in 2024.
Despite more frequent winter storms compared to the previous year, the airport managed to maintain substantial traveler numbers, aligning closely with 2024 when adjusted for the leap day that year.
The Port of New York and New Jersey remained a major cargo hub, ranking as the nation's second-busiest gateway for loaded cargo. It handled 464,253 loaded TEUs, marking a 7 percent increase over the previous year. Overall, February 2025 represented the second-highest February volumes ever for the port, handling a total of 699,240 TEUs.
Traffic across the Port Authority's bridges and tunnels decreased, with 8.5 million eastbound vehicles recorded in February 2025—a 6.4 percent drop from the previous year. Adjustment for the leap year in 2024 would translate to a 3.1 percent decline. Increased winter storms were partly responsible for the reduced traffic numbers.
The PATH commuter rail system saw a reduction in riders, falling to 64 percent of its pre-pandemic levels from 70 percent in January 2025. The decrease was largely due to the closure of the Hoboken station from January 30 to February 25 for essential infrastructure repairs and improvements. The total passenger count for February 2025 was 3.9 million, a decline of 5 percent from February 2024. Average weekday ridership saw a minor drop, with 169,747 passengers.
Post-reopening, Hoboken station saw a gradual return of riders to the system, slowly matching January's figures.
