Charter schools in Newark surpass state reading averages

Charter schools in New Jersey have been outperforming state averages, particularly in under-resourced areas. This subject was discussed on a recent episode of "Minding Your Business" on News 12+, featuring Harry Lee, the President and CEO of the New Jersey Public Charter Schools Association, in conversation with Bob Considine.

Lee highlighted, "We have 20,000 public charter school students in Newark, 80% come from low-income backgrounds and, for the second year in a row, our charter students in Newark are outperforming the state average in reading."

He further stated, "We have what many say is the top-performing public education system in the country. And we know that there’s variation across districts, right? So more affluent communities are probably doing better than the less affluent communities. But Newark charters, where 80% of the students come from low-income backgrounds, are outperforming the number one public education system in the country.”

The show, NJBIA’s "Minding Your Business," which discusses various business topics, has been recognized with several accolades, including a gold Telly Award in 2024 under the Interview & Talk Show category.
