New Jersey Taxation Division to launch online tax portal Phase 1 on May 14

The New Jersey Division of Taxation is set to implement Phase 1 of its new online NJ Tax Portal on May 14. This initiative aims to simplify the process of monthly and quarterly tax payments, including state sales taxes. The upgrade will cause temporary shutdowns of some tax filing and payment systems.

Starting April 26, taxpayers will not be able to file returns or make payments online for 20 specific taxes covered by Phase 1. However, they can still access their prior filings and payments for informational purposes. The new NJ Taxpayer Portal will be operational for filing and payments on May 14.

During the transition, all returns and payments for taxes due between May 1 and May 30 will receive a 30-day extension. This extension will be provided without any penalties or interest. For instance, if a tax is due on May 20, the business can pay it by June 20 without any penalties.

The following taxes are included in Phase 1 of the project:

- Atlantic City Luxury

- Atlantic City Tourism Promotion Fee

- Cannabis Retail Sales

- Cannabis Social Equity Excise Fee (SEEF)

- Cape May County Tourism Sales

- Casino Gross Revenue Tax

- Casino Hotel Room Fee

- Casino Hotel Room Occupancy Surcharge

- Domestic Security Fee

- Hotel/Motel Occupancy Fee/Municipal Occupancy

- Litter Control Fee

- Meadowlands Regional Hotel Use Assessment

- Motor Vehicle Tire Fee

- Multi-Casino Progressive Slot Machine Revenue Tax

- Prearranged Ride Surcharge

- Salem County Sales Reduced Rate

- Sales and Use Energy and UTUA Credit

- Sales and Use Tax

- Sports and Entertainment Facility – Millville

- Urban Enterprise Zone

Taxpayers who handle these taxes can create a profile on the Tax Portal starting May 14. The portal will later include other taxes such as Income Tax. The telephone-based tax filing system for sales tax will be permanently discontinued on April 26.

To set up an account on the new portal, business owners and tax preparers will need their Taxpayer ID, Line 1 of a recently filed return, and a four-digit code. While portal accounts are not required for filing, they ensure a more efficient process by allowing users to view account history, securely store information, and request account assistance from within the portal.

The state will provide user guides, FAQs, and videos from May 14 to assist taxpayers with setting up and navigating the portal.
