State Sen. Singer on insurance prices in New Jersey: 'Car insurance is becoming very expensive'

Robert Singer, the state senator for New Jersey's 30th District, has expressed concerns over rising car insurance costs. He attributes these increases to expensive repairs and recent legislative changes, urging lawmakers to proceed with caution. Singer made these remarks during an interview with New Jersey Review.

"Car insurance is becoming very expensive," said Robert W. Singer, District 30. "The more we tinker with it, the more problems we cause. The cost of repairing simple accidents is tremendous today. We have to look at both angles very carefully before we start tinkering with it."

The cost of car insurance in the United States has risen significantly in recent years, with rates increasing by more than 20% between 2022 and 2024. This increase is attributed to factors such as inflation, rising repair costs, and more severe accidents. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, auto insurance costs have surged at one of the fastest rates among consumer goods.

Average repair costs after car accidents have increased by nearly 33% over the past five years. The Insurance Information Institute states that this rise is primarily driven by more expensive vehicle technology and ongoing parts shortages. These escalating repair costs have had a significant impact on auto insurance pricing.

Tort costs have also had a significant impact on insurance rates across the United States. A report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform revealed that the total cost of the U.S. tort system reached $443 billion in 2020. Rising litigation expenses have contributed to increased costs for both businesses and consumers, leading to higher insurance premiums.

Singer represents New Jersey’s 30th Legislative District and has served in the New Jersey State Senate since 1993. He is currently the second most senior member and serves on several key committees, including Health, Human Services, and Senior Citizens.
