New Jersey is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, anticipated to be a major sporting and economic event in the state's history. At a briefing held on April 30 at Montclair State University, Alex Lasry, CEO of the World Cup’s NY/NJ Host Committee, discussed the opportunities this global soccer tournament presents for New Jersey businesses.
“This will be the biggest event New Jersey has ever seen,” Lasry stated, noting that the last World Cup attracted an audience larger than 13 Super Bowls combined. With MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford set to host eight matches, including the final, Lasry emphasized that New Jersey is not just a venue but "the host of the World Cup."
The tournament will take place over 40 days from June 9 to July 14, 2026, across various cities in North America. “We have eight matches here. What will people do the other 32 days?” Lasry questioned. He suggested that visitors could explore regional attractions and cultural sites, contributing to an economic impact projected between $2 billion and $4 billion through tourism and related industries.
With over a million visitors expected at fan zones and events throughout the region, there are significant opportunities for local businesses such as restaurants and hotels. Businesses are encouraged to engage with fans by hosting events or offering unique experiences.
Lasry also highlighted potential long-term benefits: “CEOs will be here,” he said. “They may consider New Jersey to locate their business – or at least take vacations here.”
Bettina Garibaldi from the NY/NJ Host Committee mentioned that their website would soon offer a toolkit with strategies for businesses to capitalize on World Cup activities. A digital form will also be available for submitting events for promotional inclusion.
Tom Bracken of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce described this as more than just a sports event: “One of the key factors to measuring success...will be the depth and breadth of economic opportunity here,” he said.
Speakers included Jim Kirkos from Meadowlands Chamber; Elisa Charters from Latina Surge National; Daniel Diaz from NBCUniversal Local; Gus Penaranda from Evolvere Consulting Inc.; and Keith Strudler from Montclair State University.
Comcast and Telemundo partnered with N.J. Chamber of Commerce and Montclair State University for this event.
